Having used several other rototillers in my more than 50 years in vegetable growing at a farm, I find this Novus walk-behind tractor is the best available in terms of cost, ease of assembly, quality of design and performance. It has the same features of tillers costing about four times as much with regard to its direct drive gear transmission and the power of its motor, but at a price affordable to a home gardener, homesteader, market gardener or small farmer. Its dual operating levers offer ease of use while they combine to enhance maneuverability and work. The tiller’s value is demonstrated in the quality and ease of the work it performs. Under-powered tillers with belt drives claim to be self-propelled but need to be pushed up slopes or forced down into the ground to till it. This tiller moves easily and steadily through the soil with minimal guidance. I found this Novus machine is also stone tolerant in the rocky ground where I farm in CT. Stones are in general unearthed or cast aside by the machine that rarely bucks or stalls when it encounters ledge or a large rock. I found the machine has remained solid and suffered no damage in rock encounters. My vegetable field was left in fine condition after I tilled it to remove weeds between potato, onion and cabbage rows and cleared open ground for planting tomatoes, peppers, beans and squash. Buy this machine with confidence. Its 18-inch width as defined by the wheels and tines is ideal for maintaining vegetable plants set 36-inches apart. It may also be used early in the growing season to till between rows of plants set out 24-inches apart. The machine comes broken down in a sturdy box but with wrenches to put it together, easy to follow instructions and engine and transmission oil to enable assembly in about 20 minutes. . You then just add gasoline, pull the recoil starter once and get to work. This trouble free and easy to operate machine is a joy to use. The thoughtfulness inherent in all aspects of this machine including its design and assembly is outstanding.

This Nuovo rear tine rototiller is the best of its kind I have ever used, superior in design to all competing brands in a cost affective package. Being 75 and having worked on large vegetable lots at a farm for more than 50 years, I have used several other tillers , such as Troy Built and Husqvarna, that all had issues with control mechanisms and the quality of the tillage. These problems have been eliminated in the engineering design of this Nuovo machine, which is equivalent to or better than ones offered by competing bands at four times the cost. The dual Nuovo controls are easy to use to engage the transmission, while the pace of the work is readily determined through the gasoline throttle. The engine, which starts easily, is sufficiently powerful to self-propel the machine as it tills the ground. That issue has plagued under-powered machines, supposedly self-propelled, which require operators to push them up slopes or press down on their rotating tines to progress in the work. This Nuovo machine overturns the soil in place as it moves along with minimal guidance while the plants to the sides are unharmed. With other machines, the dirt can be thrown to the sides onto the plants. All weeds are destroyed in the path of this Nuovo machine, whereas some machines such as the Huaqvarna can leave weed strips behind. The Nuovo unit has a strong direct geared transmission which is very rock tolerant, unlike other machines that use drive belts and a slip clutch to cope with that problem. In general, the Nuovo machine will either dislodge or skip over rocks. In very rare instances, the machine may buck or stall on a rock with no damage to itself. Being in CT, I have to contend with rocks that have in the past required tillage with break-away plows to prevent equipment damage as will as gang harrows with a beam dragged behind to smooth the field for planting after plowing. If we are not working on river floodplains or on rare rock-free bands of topsoil left by glaciers in New England, we have to contend with rocks that create difficulties for large tractor driven rototiller attachments or walk-behind small tractor tillers such as this Nuovo rear-tine unit. The same rototiller standards for machinery and tillage are imposed nationwide on farmers regardless of the quality of their land and the means of vegetable, corn or grain production. Also, small tractors with cultivator tines once used to maintain vegetable fields have been eliminated and replaced by walk-behind tractors such as this new Nuovo machine, which is destined to be a workhorse on market gardens, homesteads and vegetable farms for field maintenance. Buy this tiller with confidence and enjoy how it operates and the quality of its work. I extend my praise to the mechanical engineer or design team that created this new rototiller that is a pleasure to use compared with all tillers I have used in the past.
